What Is Reason 5.0 All About?

Propellerhead Software is the company responsible for Reason 5.0, one of the most appealing and unique music making softwares available today. This single program allows the use of synthesizers, sequencers, samplers, mixers, all from the comfort of your home, and right in front of your computer screen.

It’s almost exactly like a real studio, except it’s virtual. But the look of the components, from the bars, gliders, buttons etc., are all copied from the real hardware. Even without the use of any other sequencing software, you are already guaranteed to be able to create sounds never heard before.

It all started back in 2000 with the release of Reason 1.0. The number one element which caught everyone’s attention was the virtual studio rack, where you could insert your choice of effects and virtual instruments. This studio rack looked exactly like the real thing, complete with wobbling cables at the backside!

There have now been four versions ever since the arrival of the first Reason more than a decade ago, and it just keeps getting better and better. Reason 5.0 subscribes to the same standard of excellence with new devices such as the Kong Drum Designer and the Dr. Octo Rex loop player. Of course you can expect significant improvements in the performance of the older instruments and effects as well.

Customizable features in Reason 5.0 make it a most unique and personalized experience. No two Reason racks will look the same for different people. The virtual environment changes depending on who you are and what your personality is. And of course, everyone will have their preferred settings when it comes to the reverb, distortion, chorus effect, etc.

The only disadvantage in Reason 5.0, amidst all its great features, is that it lacks the ability to record audio on its own, and it doesn’t accept third-party plugins. The audio recording part is where ReWire comes in. These restrictions might seem disadvantageous at first, but it doest effectively lend to stability and reliability of the software. Reason is very light on your CPU, and it doesn’t hang or crash like the other music softwares regularly do.

For its price I guess it’s one of the best buys, so long as you can swallow some of its quirks, like the lack of audio sampling support and third party plug-ins. If you can, then Reason 5.0 will definitely count as all you need to create the music of your dreams.

If you’re interested to exercise your artistic and musical spirit, then go ahead and try Reason 5.0 for yourself. Or read another article by me here.
