The Need For Proper Violin Restoration
Violin restoration has to be done properly. The development of this instrument very much goes hand in hand with modern physics and science as we know them. The importance of this tool is really that wide- ranging and vital.
While in England Newton developed his classical mechanics and defined the movement of planets in the sky. Antonio Stradivari in Cremona, Italy was creating the greatest and most valuable violins in the world. This tool was developed from the family of ‘violas’ about 100 years ago.
The musical tool’s final form also came from an Italian. That master was Gasparo, who worked with his pupil- Giovanni Majid. Much like modern guitars, it evolved due to the need for enhancement of the sound, for the purpose of public performances.
It was a tool of the masses, accessible and daring. The viola was still a required favorite of the royal court. The new design was reproduced by a master from Cremona – Andrea Amati. His sons continued the work of their father and refined the design of violins.
There are some who believe that Stradivari had learned the craft from Amati. The basis for this is a single sign, that was found on one of Stradivari’s violins, giving it style not unlike Amati’s. What we know for certain is that both of them lived in Cremona, during the 17′th century, as well as that Stradivari made his violins in a similar style to Amati.
Shortly after that, Stradivari was operating his own workshop. This marked the start of one what is among the most distinguished careers in the craft. Through the years, he created more than 1000 violins.
In the 17 hundreds, it had gained massive recognition. The most brilliant composers of the day all wrote works focused on the instrument. This increased usage and specialization of both the music styles and the violin’s form led to quality violin restoration becoming almost an art form today.
