Teach Yourself To Sing – Exercises And Tips
So you want to teach yourself to sing. You can, in fact that is really the only way to do it. What do I mean by this? Many people do not realise this but even when you have a vocal coach, you are still teaching yourself to sing.
There are two parts to becoming a better singer. The information and the application of the information. It is important to have both. first you want to make sure that you get then best information to help you improve. Then you have to use exercises day in and day out to become a better singer.
I am going to show you 3 great exercises to get you started. They will all focus on breathing because it is the foundation of all great singers. For the 1st exercise lay on the ground on you back with a heavy book on your lower stomach. Inhale and try to raise the book by expanding you stomach. DO NOT expand you chest.
DO NOT use your stomach muscles to expand your stomach! It should occur naturally as you fill it with air. Your muscles should remain relaxed. This is called diaphragmatic breathing, and it is how you should always be breathing. It is the same style used to meditate, and how you used to breath when you were are baby.
The next exercise trains you how to use the right amount of air. Take a 2 inch square piece of paper and put it against the wall. Blow on it from 2 inchs way and try to keep it against the wall. Your are going to do this like your are blowing out candles.
Try to keep the paper on the wall as long as you can. Conserve your air, using as little as possible so you can blow longer. The amount of air that you have to use to keep the paper on the wall is about same as what you should use to sing. You need a lot less than most people think. More air than that and you create back pressure on the chords.
You should still be using the breathing style learned from the first exercise. You can always go back to that exercise if you lose the proper feeling. Spend about 10 minutes on the this exercise everyday, and you will begin to see improvements. Try to increase the amount of time that you can keep the paper against the wall.
The 3rd breathing exercise is known as the slow leak. It is pretty self explanatory. You will take a deep breath and create a hissss sound like a snake. Let out just enough air to make the noise audible. Your are aiming to make the hiss sound at an even volume and not move around. This will help you stay on pitch.
These drills will help provide you a foundation on teaching yourself to sing. Once you have strong breathing habits, the rest of you training will be much easier. The keys to success are to get take you time and get it to feel easy. If you are pushing or pulling in your neck or stomach muscles it is never good. You want to eliminate tension, and not create it.
These three drills will help you teach yourself to sing with a great foundation.
