Sell Your Beats- 3 Things to Avoid

In the past I’ve written plenty of articles about how to sell beats, normally under different pen names than this one. I’ve helped a tremendous amount of beat makers online learn how to become a music producer and start making money selling beats. It’s always been a passion of mine to teach, and so I always try to give the best, most honest information possible. In this article I want to reveal to you 3 of the most common mistakes producers make while trying to sell their beats online.

The very 1st thing you need to avoid is *drum roll*… Bad content. This is the biggest problem that beat makers force themselves to face on websites such as Soundclick or MySpace. If you don’t even have a Buy Now button on your page, you are FAILING. It’s no wonder why you’re not selling beats (no offense). You can set up a Buy Now button absolutely free using Pay Pal’s Merchant Tools. You might not know this, but 70% of your potential clients will not buy from you, ever, if you don’t have a simple and effective store set up on your site. For the most part people don’t want to get involved on a contact basis, so nobody is going to email you except for Exclusive sales… This is because Leasing Rights are cheap and they don’t see it as a risky business, while exclusive rights are so expensive that a rapper will ask all sorts of questions before buying.

2. Making random music beats. This is arguably the stupidest thing any producer can do while trying to sell their beats on the internet. SO MANY beat makers world wide make instrumentals that would be great for film music or jazz, but simply don’t sound like anything a rapper would pick up and use. Remember that you are creating a product and you need to make the right kind of merchandise. In my experience (and most other producers) hardcore beats, R&B beats, sampled beats and club beats are the four real heavy sellers on sites like Soundclick and MySpace.

3. Don’t make the mistake of gathering information from the wrong sources. I can’t tell you how many producers online think they’ve learned it all when in fact they’ve simply been hearing the wrong info from the wrong people. If somebody says your beats are hot, it shouldn’t mean anything unless they are rappers or producers who sell beats (not just any producer, feel me). Musicians are usually quick to fake their stats, so don’t let them convince you they’re making money unless you see real proof.

I hope this has been insightful! I will do my best to continue to write articles such as these in order to help everybody make money from their music. It may seem like a crazy dream to most but believe me, it’s much more than that.
