Online Video Rental is Convenient and Fast
With all of the benefits that I’m realizing with my online DVD rentals, I don’t know why I waited so long to start. I’m using a 3-at-a-time movie plan, and I get to watch unlimited movies each month for one flat fee. Whenever I want a new DVD, I send one back postage paid and a couple of days later a different DVD is in my postbox. In this way, I control how long I keep movies and never have to worry about rental deadlines.
Another part of the rental service that I’m finding very convenient is the video on demand. Every service is different, with Blockbuster even offering a dedicated box, but with Netflix, I can stream movies directly to my PC. This is a nice touch and it helps to complement my viewing habits.
With most online DVD rental services, you go to their site and make a list (or queue) of the films you’d like to rent. You then rank your films on your list in the order you’d like to receive them. Based on availability and your ranking, the pictures on your list will be sent to you through first class mail.
Is it a better deal than my local Blockbuster? For me, the answer is a solid “yes,” particularly if I take video on demand into account. It only takes about 3 rentals every 2 weeks to pay for itself, not including all of the intangibles like time, gas, convenience, and so on.
Regardless of your watching habits. there’s a service out there for you. Obviously, the big mainstream services are Netflix and Blockbuster, but there are also smaller services out there. Services like URentDVD and SugarDVD exist for online adult DVD rental, and GreenCine is a favorite for independent and foreign film enthusiasts.
One reason that some people don’t try online rental is because they don’t want to commit themselves to anything long-term. But for some of the services, like Netflix for example, you can pause your membership at any time, and almost every service allows you to downgrade and upgrade whenever you like.
