MIDI 101: What are the Parts of a MIDI Keyboard
Now you know how MIDI works, let’s take another look at the varied parts which make up our MIDI instrument.
There are 2 basic parts of a MIDI controller: the keys and the controllers. These are the ones you will be getting acquainted with as we are going through this article. These keys and controllers change their numbers, functions, and sizes depending on the model or brand of MIDI keyboard you purchase. Some MIDI controllers are compact and lightweight and some aren't. Naturally, it will depend on whatever you choose to buy, dependent on your wishes and preferences.
First off, there are the keys. These are the keyboard-like keys that are located at the centre of your MIDI keyboard. These keys alter on their sizes, numbers, and touch. If you have a big studio and you are only playing your MIDI keyboard within inside the studio, then you can go forward and choose the full-on 62, 73, or 88-keys MIDI controller.
But if you’re a traveling producer, then you should opt for the portable MIDI controller with 25, 37, or 49 keys. The keys also change in touch. This touch contains the aftertouch, the weighted or unweighted characteristic, the particular feel of the keys, and whether the keys are velocity-sensitive. These features will be further debated in other documents.
Next among the basic parts include the controllers. These controllers include the various faders, knobs, buttons, wheels, drum pads and programme selectors. All these control a specific function. Functions include modulation, pitch, switch modes, hardware MIDI synths, and others.
Depending on your MIDI controller, these controllers can either be assignable or pre-set for the sake of convenience. These controllers make music making simpler and more fun!
These two are the key parts of MIDI controller keyboards but there are still others, there are ports you use to attach the MIDI controller keyboard to your portable PC and other stuff. These make-up your MIDI controller keyboard. Know it, understand it, play it.
