Mamma Mia – Drama and Laughter all on One Stage

Mamma Mia is a hilarious Broadway musical, which has also hit the big screen. It is known for its music and storyline – both of which are comical yet dramatic. The combination of these two pieces makes this one of the best musical productions today.

In London – 1999 – Mamma Mia began performing on stage. The mixture of drama and comedy is perfect, just enough for a very entertaining couple of hours. ABAA is a dance group from the 70′s, which is where the music comes from. The producer of Mamma Mia – Judy Craymer – thought the music made for a great musical performance. After approaching two of the songwriters for ABBA, she was well on her way to making this dream come true.

The story behind the musical is real. Women – most of them anyway – dream of their wedding day and know exactly what they want. These women plan every little detail, and dream of their fathers walking them down the aisle and “giving them away”. The main character – in Mamma Mia – is no different from these women, with the exception of having a father.

Sophie – the main character – is 20-years old and engaged to be married. She is the daughter of a single mother – Donna. Her two best friends, Rosie and Tonya – are by her side every step of the way; even when Sophie decides to snoop around in her mother’s past. Sophie gets her hands on an old diary, which luckily tells the story of three intimate dates – with three separate men. She is convinced that one of these men must be her father. Sophie secretly – behind her mother’s back – invites each of these men to her wedding.

The story then leads into the day before the wedding; the day the three men arrive – Sam (architect), Harry (British banker), and Bill (Australian writer). At this point in the story, audiences are able to witness the story from each person’s perspective as it jumps between the men, Sophie, and Donna. Imagine the anxiety Sophie is experiencing trying to determine which one is her father, and the embarrassment Donna is experiencing having to see her ex’s with their loved ones. There is nothing more humorous that pure reality!

Mamma Mia is the perfect escape for you, your girlfriends, mothers, and daughters. Tickets to this performance make great birthday gifts, mother’s day presents, or even just because. Surprise one of the girls in your life, and take them out for a few hours; it will be the best couple of hours you have had in a long time.

You could even make a day out of the whole thing. Enjoy a pedicure / manicure at the closest spa. Have a long, luxurious lunch. Get a massage at your hotel before laying down for a short nap. Prepare for your evening of laughter and bliss sitting and watching fabulous actors on the stage performing Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia is a story about women and their drama, which makes it the perfect Broadway musical for a group of women to go see together. Enjoy 2 1/2 hours of laughter and tears without any interruptions! (And yes, it is much better on stage than the big screen, although both are great!)
