Understanding The Meaning Behind Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana Lyrics

Before one can understand the meaning behind Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana Lyrics, one must first understand the life of a superstar. A life in which often, groupies tend to follow their favorite artists all around the World for a chance of a hello, a fling, much less a relationship. However, while both have no doubt happened over time, at times such behavior can also lead to blackmail, deceit and heartbreak.

As such, often one may have such a first impression when hearing the title of the song only, it is more likely the case that Michael is singing about an overzealous fan who he became involved with which did not work out due to her demands of stardom in exchange for personal gratification and sex. However, as one discovers such fans are often at every band’s backdoor stage, it becomes clear that her motives are less about being a fan and more about finding success through famous individuals such as Michael.

Also, although the fan in the song seems to have fared okay with only a broken heart, others who have provided stars with such overzealous attention in more recent yeas have often faced charges of harassment or stalking. So, if one has a favorite star, whether actor or musician, one may in fact want to keep one’s distance in order to prevent such charges in one’s own life. For, the days when such attention could be garnered and appreciated seem to have transformed into a time when individuals need their private moments more than ever. Therefore, more and more individuals who find themselves feeling uncomfortable in such situations are notifying authorities.

Besides, having a dream or wish to become involved in a romantic relationship with a superstar of often out of the question. However, admittedly there have been a few romances with famous people who started in such a light. Still, the occasions are rare and getting to the point of knowing one another without being accused of being a pervert or stalker are also. So, regardless of one’s affections for the stars, one need approach such with the intellectual fortitude and intelligence one has been taught in such regard by keeping their distance, unless of course, approached by such a person oneself.

As to how one can see that the lyrics are in relation to either a factual or fictional groupie named “Dirty Diana”, one only has to read the line about “waiting at the backdoor stage”, to see this is the case. Whereas, in this case however, it is not about being a fan but rather wanting to be a star in exchange for sex as is seen by the line “I’ll Be Your Everything, If You Make Me A Star…”, which implies that Dirty Diana is only going to become involved with the star if he can make her one as well. A point which no one who has ever heard the song or seen a related video can deny.

So, while Michael may have provided an “in” to this fan he writes of in the song, apparently it did not take long for him to see the impossibilities of such a relationship, especially with someone who had attempted to blackmail him into making them a star as such lyrics suggest. In addition, the song clearly states that it is not only his band whom the woman is trying to blackmail but anyone who she can in order to become a star. Something which is most likely not going to happen, whether with a superstar like Michael Jackson or anywhere else who such a groupie attempts to blackmail into achieving their own success either now or in the future.

Now, if relationships and sex were the only thing needed to become a star, many more individuals would be seen in commercials, television and movies worldwide. So, whether in relation to movies, music or theater, if one desires to become an actor, often one must take a great deal of acting classes in order to do so, or in the case of music, must learn an instrument, have a natural voice or take voice lessons. Therefore, it appears that Michael Jackson is attempting to provide such a lesson in the lyrics to “Dirty Diana”.

To this end, whether such lyrics were written to warn other stars or prevent future groupies from attempting such overzealous behavior at shows is not clear. However, anyone listening to such a song may want to think twice before treating an actor, comedian, dancer, newscaster, poet, reporter, singer or superstar in such fashion. For, while Michael wrote a song in relation to such behavior, often individuals approaching well known individuals in such a manner can and have faced jail time on stalking and other charges related to the extreme attention one has given, or is giving, such a star. This is often true regardless to the amount of attention one has been giving such a person over time, whether such time is a short period or over the course of a longer period. Of course, in situations where such individuals were invited to come back stage, into a dressing room, home or office, then this remains questionable as when an invitation is provided, it is harder to rid oneself of such a fan, if and when one decides to do so as so clearly indicated by the Dirty Diana Lyrics by Mr. Jackson.
