Is Reading Music Important Skill For Drumming?
Should you learn to read music, if you are learning how to drum? Is it important, is it worth your time? What do you think? Most would say that it’s not really that important. Not even all professionals can do it, so why should you, a beginner, bother. Well, you should. Why? Because it can really help you in becoming a better drummer. And it’s most definitely worth your time.
Learning drum notation is not as hard as you might think. True, you won’t master it overnight and it will require time, effort, and quite a bit of practice, but it’s not rocket science. And once you’ll get the hang of it, you’ll see it was worth it.
How can the ability of reading music improve you as a drummer and as a musician? It can improve you in many ways. First, it will make you an overall better musician. You will gain a better understanding not only of your instrument, but music in general.
One of the biggest benefits will be the ability to play almost any song without even listening to it first. You will only need a piece of paper with notes on it. Plus, you won’t need to memorize everything anymore. Now wouldn’t that be great.
You should know that drum notation is somewhat different from the standard one. Everything still happens on a staff, but the lines and spaces don’t represent different pitches. They represent different instruments on your drum kit. There are five lines, so for example, bass drum notes would go on the bottom one, snare drum would be on the middle line, and so on.
It’s important to realize that drum notation is the best and definitely the most accurate way of conveying musical information. It has all the information you need in order to play a particular song. You just have to understand it.
Hopefully, you can see now how important this skill is. And I will say it once more – it’s not so difficult to learn. And the sooner you start, the better.
