Is Drumming A Skill Or A Talent?

If you would ask what drumming is – a skill or a talent – most people would answer talent. Are they right? Do you need a God-given talent in order to be any good at playing drums? Well, not really. You see, this is not a matter of being born under a lucky star, but rather a matter of hard work. Saying that you weren’t born talented is just a cheap excuse.

Any musical instrument requires time, commitment, and effort. There are no shortcuts. Drums are no exception. You have to learn new skills and start improving them. It’s a slow process, but very rewarding. And you can be sure of one thing: no one was ever born with the ability to play like a professional. It’s a learned skill.

Does this mean that talent is not important at all and that anybody can learn how to play drums? Of course talent is a good thing to have, everything will go easier, if you have it. But most important here is hard work. What I’m trying to say is that talent alone is not going to be enough.

Nothing of value is ever just given to you. You have to work for it and if you want to be a good drummer, you’ll have to learn quite a lot. From how to set up your drums and correctly hold drumsticks, to reading notes and understanding music theory.

Anyone who is just starting out needs instructions, some sort of lessons. It’s important to start with the fundamentals and work your way up. Guidance, especially at this early stage, is crucial.

Without any guidance, a beginner can quickly develop bad habits, which can have very discouraging effects. So don’t get ahead of yourself and get some sort of well structured lessons. Today, this is not much of a problem, because you can get quality lessons on DVDs for quite reasonable price.

Just remember, talent alone won’t get you very far. Hard work, lessons, and practice, practice, and once again practice will.
