What woodworking experience do you have? This only matters because of cost. Any hardwood is ok. I know some people will claim different woods have “richer tone ” etc. But since solid body guitars have little resonance the choice of wood will have minimal effect on sound.
The Cherry or Rosewood look great but are more expensive. For a first project I would suggest Birch or Poplar. Even Mahogany. Depends on the color you want, unless you are going to paint it. Learned to play in high school but have not played since. But I did make two guitars ( liked woodworking ) for a friend. The first was Birch because of money. I didn’t want to ***** up on expensive wood. The second was made from Ash. Both were stained and varnished, not painted. I used McKloskey’s Ultra Spar Marine Varnish. My favorite wood finish. Primer coat thinned 50% with mineral spirits and sanded between coats. Final coat buffed out to high gloss. Ultra Spar is high gloss anyway.
EDit: That was almost 25 yr. ago and Tim still plays the Ash guitar, has two sets of pickups so he can have slightly different sound. Also still uses the head amp I made.
( electronics is still my hobby as well as my trade.) A guitar you make yourself will sound better just because yo made it. Enjoy and take your time making it.
