I Love Comedy Shows
Laughter really is good medicine! We all have days when we feel like we’d have been ahead to just stay in bed and fuggedaboutit. However, it’s always better to try to pick up our spirits and move on, than to be an Eeyore about the whole thing and continue feeling bad. When you’ve had a bad day, fix a couple of tempting snacks and settle down on the couch with a good comedy TV show. While sitcoms are not my usual fare, when I need a little laughter, this type of comedy TV series fills the bill.
For example, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ can make me laugh, one of the better comedy TV shows, because it has something for everyone. No matter who you are, you can relate to one of the characters. The cynical, grouchy father in law either makes you laugh at yourself, or allows you to laugh at the similarities between him and your own father in law. Raymond gets laughs from husbands who can relate to his diplomatic, self-effacing, down-trodden husband character role. Raymond’s mother is the stereotypical, nagging, guilt tripping mother, while Deborah plays the ‘straight man’, the sensible, suburban Mom with all the problems of motherhood. Deborah’s sister? The wild, irresponsible one, much like your own sister, right?
One of the great classic comedy TV shows was ‘I Love Lucy’, still shown on some of the cable and satellite stations. Lucy, the ultimate dingbat, got into more trouble and ridiculous situations than any of us could in a lifetime of trying. Desi Arnez was the ‘straight man’ in this comedy TV series, the perfect foil for Lucy’s antics. Fred and Ethel fulfilled much the same roles as Deborah’s in laws, grouchy and sensible at the same time.
The ‘Saturday Night Live’ comedy TV show is another perennial favorite. Perhaps they were best back in the 70s, or maybe my sense of humor has changed. Nonetheless, the recent Tina Fey impersonation of Sarah Palin has to be an all time series of performances in the comedy TV show Hall of Fame.
‘Seinfeld’ is another great in the comedy TV show annals. The jokes are great and you really get the flavor of the average New Yorker’s lifestyle, although the same cannot be said for the humor you’ll find on the streets of New York. ‘Friends’ ran for a long time, another good pick-me-up in comedy TV show history. ‘Desperate Housewives’ is a great satire on suburban life and your standard soap opera. No matter what your taste in humor, there’s something worth watching right now! So, when you’ve had a terrible day, reach for the remote and find a reason to laugh! You’ll feel better tomorrow.
