How to Become a Music Producer

Every day I get another email regarding how to become a music producer and make thousands of dollars selling beats.

The answer I always give them is simple… It’s a lot easier than you might think! Selling beats does not require any degree or schooling, so don’t stop yourself short of trying because you’re afraid to dedicate your life to it.

If you’re going to go to school for audio engineering, that’s probably a great idea! You should always try to step up your game… But if you’re going just to make your first dollar, it’s a seriously unethical idea.

You need to think about how to sell beats online. This is going to be the easiest and most understandable route for you to take.

Sites like Soundclick, MySpace and Forums are the playground for music producers around the world. You can put your beats in front of low-budget hip hop artists internationally and sell them directly.

Now, remember that almost every beat maker alive is trying to sell their beats to Eminem or Dr. Dre, so going for the big shots is so highly competitive it’s almost impossible. Instead, think about selling your beats to rappers who hardly have any cash in their pockets.

Sure, you won’t make as much money per sale, but who said you had to sell Exclusive Rights? You can sell them Leasing Rights, giving them the ability to sell a few thousand units for a small fee like $25-$50 per beat.

OK sure, you could sell your rap beats to big timers like 50 Cent for $30,000 each, but EVERYBODY is going after that… Plus, your chances of getting screwed over are high.

What if you sold your beats for those smaller numbers, $25-$50 each? You could sell them to low budget artists (who need the music just as badly) and you could re-sell them over and over again, never giving away Exclusives. This is bar none the BEST way to make money as a producer! Rappers like this are everywhere and they’re DESPERATE to find great beats!
