How Do I Find A Good MP3 Wireless FM Modulators?

First things first, lets get something clear so we’re both on the same page when talking about a MP3 Wireless FM Modulator. Many people mix the terms FM Modulator and FM Transmitter so let’s try to first clear up which is which.

A FM Modulator is simply this, a permanently attached (in almost every situation) device that you connect your MP3 player or other audio device and it will transmit to your car’s FM Radio. You can use a modulator in more places than your car but that is by far the most common.

There are other limitations when using a FM Modulator. such as you can’t change the frequency very easily once it’s installed. Because of this you usually have to use a frequency that’s not used by radio stations like 87.5, 87.7 or 87.9 FM. Plus you have to keep the modulator close to your FM Radio because they usually only broadcast a few inches or a foot or two at best.

Another option is to use a frequency between 88.0 and 108.0. This is the public FM Band where commercial radios stations play so you may run into transmission problems.

A second problem unless you are good at electronics or have the money to pay someone else you will have to remove the FM Radio and install the FM Modulator in between the FM Radio and antenna because it only goes a few feet.

Also, don’t forget that you may need to hire someone to install it if you aren’t comfortable with dealing in electrical because a FM Modulator needs to be hardwired into the car’s power system. If you don’t know what you are doing you can hurt yourself or really screw up your car’s electrical system.

Plus you could also screw up your car’s audio system as well if the 2 above are not bad enough…

Now, regarding FM Transmitters. A FM Transmitter operates on the same concept as a FM Modulator but it is typically designed to be mobile. FYI, I’m talking about personal FM Transmitters here that fall under the Part 15 FCC rules NOT the high power FM Transmitters that a commercial radio station may use.

If you pick the right FM Transmitter you can achieve the same objective as a FM Modulator but with it you also benefit from:

* No Installation Required – FM Transmitters are designed to be mobile so you won’t need to mess around with installation like a FM Modulator.

* No Frequency Limitations – Most Good FM Transmitters will let you cover the entire public band so you don’t have to worry about fighting with a commercial station.

* Broadcast Further – You can broadcast much further than just a few inches and if you go with a quality FM Transmitter it can go over 100 feet.

* More Mobility – Without needing to hard wire the FM Transmitter you can take the FM Transmitter with you if you want. Such as into your home or office. Of course this depends on which FM Transmitter you purchase and what power options it offers.

* More Flexibility – If you choose a good FM Transmitter you can use more audio sources than just your MP3 Player which gives you more flexibility in what audio source you can use.

As you can see a FM Transmitter is heads-and-shoulders over a FM Modulator. Of course you need to make sure you buy a good FM Transmitter that actually works.

Now you may have the question “If a FM Transmitter is what I really want instead of a FM Modulator were and how do I find the right one?” Just keep reading and I will help you.

— Finding The Right Fit For You — When looking for a MP3 Wireless FM Modulator (i.e. FM Transmitter) you will want to take into consideration several factors to make sure you don’t waste your money on one that doesn’t work for you. Here are a few things you have to ask yourself before you buy any FM Transmitter:

1. Do I want to be able to broadcast more than just my MP3 Player? – For example you may also have a satellite radio, home stereo, computer or even your TV that you want to broadcast as well

2. What power options will I want or need? – If only using it in your car is what you plan on doing then a FM Transmitter will be fine but if you want to use it other places then you need to make sure it offers other options

3. How far do I want to transmit? – A quality FM Transmitter will let you go a 100 feet or more but if you will only use it in the car them maybe 5 or 10 feet will be fine for you.

4. Where do I plan on using it? – If all you need is a 12V power supply because you will only use it in your car then you shouldn’t have any issues finding a FM Transmitter that does just that.

5. What If Technology Changes On Me? – Technology changes at a rapid pace so what works today might not work tomorrow. For example if you have an iPod today and buy a FM Transmitter that only works on iPods you may be fine for now but if you ever go with another MP3 Player or if iPods change the way you connect to devices and you upgrade your iPod you now have to buy another FM Transmitter, this can be expensive. However if you go with a FM Transmitter that is universal then you never have to worry about technology changes or deal with firmware & software compatibility issues.

Once you have these basic questions answered you can then begin to decide which MP3 Wireless FM Modulator (i.e. FM Transmitter) you want to buy.
