Horse racing aintree is completely dominated by one of the worlds most famous horse races. The Grand National. The first grand national that took place was in 1839 and was won by a horse called lottery. Since that first race this event has gained in such popularity that there are not many people who have not heard of it.
The grand national at liverpool aintree is a steeplechase and run over two circuits which cover four and half miles. The race is usually held at the beginning of April and on a Saturday.
Racing at aintree and the grand national is one of the most attended events of the year and infects all who attend with its magical quality. People who can’t attend will usually stop what they are doing to watch this famous horse race on the television.
Although there are many notable moments in the race courses history one of the most memorable has to be in 1997 when a “bomb alert” on grand national day cleared the race course. It was a major exercise to evacuate so many race goers quickly and safely. The race was re-scheduled for the Monday at 5.00 pm and the winner was Lord Gyllene.
