Getting a Good Agent

Even if you have the best skills and the greatest looks, you will not be able to put a single foot into the door without the help of an agent. Having the right agent is very important because while there are a number of agents out there, they all specialize in certain things. Check out the local malls and listen to the radio for advertisements from them as well as take the time to ask around. Every actor in every DVD that’s at Netflicks DVD Rental, has started out exactly the same. The best agents though, you will only hear about through word of mouth because they do not have to advertise.

Before you start looking for your agent, knowing what type of work you would like to do as well as whether you want to be in the union or not will play an important role in making the right decision. Once you have decided it is time to find an agent, when you have already taken the time to make these determinations you ill find the selection process much easier.

Finding a good agent is no easy task no matter how you look at it, because if it were easy then there would never be starving actors out there working in bars and restaurants. There may be some that will actually advertise, but most; especially the good ones do not which makes finding one even harder. Probably one of the best resources for finding an agent is through the Screen Actors Guild as they keep a list of all those agents which are affiliated with them.

The Screen Actors Guild is a union and those who are members or in the case of agents; affiliated, have to conform to a certain set of ethical practices in their daily work. The importance of choosing an agent is vital, remember the ‘rule’ about Netflix rental that I told you about earlier in this piece. You are far less likely to have one of them ask for money upfront and even if they do, it is unlikely that it is for something unscrupulous.

Knowing what type of acting you want to do is important because it will result in a more accurate list of agents which are affiliated with the guild. You will want to send a resume and headshot to each one of them and as a result you will get several replies. Then you can do it interview style and make the best selection for your needs.

Most importantly though, take your time and do not rush in to the first agent you meet. Interview several of them and then you can choose the best one for your situation. Pay attention to the types of work they specialize in as well as their list of both contacts as well as actors. The longer the list the less personal the agent will be.

You need to determine what type of acting you want to do. Do you want to be a union or non-union actor and also take the time to determine if you are ready for an agent as well. This is important because all agents specialize in certain things. Some of them will only send you to union auditions while others will never do this. At the same time some specialize in commercials, television or any other possible branch.

Once you start looking for an agent you will notice right away that finding one can be very difficult. The ones that advertise are not worth signing with and the good ones will never advertise even in the phone book. Perhaps one place that will help you find an agent is the Screen Actors Guild as the keep lists of affiliated agents. Of course this list will not tell you if they are any good though.

Once you have this list of agents that you received from the Screen Actors Guild that specialize in the type of acting you would like to do, then you will need to take a headshot as well as a resume and send each one on the list a copy. The ones who get back to you, you will be able to interview them to determine who is right for you.
