Gay Travel Guide, The Cenote Travel Experience

When you are looking for interesting destinations for gay travel, there are a multitude of locations you can select from. For those that enjoy spending time on the beach and enjoying the water, Mexico’s rich coasts present many engaging opportunities.

However, the coast isn’t the only option for water fun in Mexico. Many visitors have discovered the incredible sights and sounds of a Cenote vacation in the country’s Yucatan region.

A Cenote is a natural sinkhole that exists within an underground network of caves and rivers. They exist in the range of 60 feet beneath the surface and are carved out of a subterranean, cavernous natural world.

Cenotes were formed in a process that took many thousands of years as caves and caverns collapsed to create sinkholes that become receptacles for water runoff. This provided a source of fresh water for the ancient Maya people in places with limited supplies of fresh water.

Cenotes were also the site of ancient spiritual rituals, and were considered the portal for the human spirit to enter the afterlife. Because of this, they were maintained in pristine condition, and thus have been able to survive into modern times.

Some travelers might be a bit put off by descriptions like “underground” and “subterranean,” conjuring a mental image of a dark and frightening environment that is hardly suitable for an enjoyable vacation. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Cenote vacations are quite fun, with plenty of excitement to offer to travelers. There are thousands of them in the region, and the Yucatan Caves and Cenotes are some of the most spectacular and unique destinations for discriminating travelers.

There are a number of reasons you should consider a visit to a Yucatan Cenote. The clear waters of the caves are some of the most beautiful to see and experience in all of Mexico.

The waters of the Cenotes are still and placid, with no currents to disturb them. Water temperature averages around 75 degrees, making them a relaxing place to bask. This is uncharacteristic of surface lakes and waterways, and makes a Cenote quite a unique vacation experience.

When it comes to actually visiting a Cenote, it is important to perform a little research first. After all, there are multitudes of them in Yucatan and you want to select the right one for your vacation needs.

Also, when you do visit a Cenote, you want to be prepared for the trek down below the surface. When you trek down the spiraling walkways, enjoy the experience from a historical perspective. Some of the walkways are hundreds of years old and the rock formations in the caves are upwards of thousands of years old. So, do not rush past them. Stop and enjoy them for a second!

You might consider joining a tour group with a guided tour of the Cenote to take full advantage of this captivating experience. You’re sure to enjoy yourself and bring home many wonderful memories.
