Down Argentine Way: Entertaining 20th Century Fox lyrical with Grable in the film that increased her to stardom dropping in love with slick Argentinean horse breeder Ameche. Miranda is wonderful in her first American film, acting infectious Brazilian melodies with her own band and look out for the Nicholas Brothers, who do a dynamite forte number. Picture postcard color all the way through. Cast includes Don Ameche, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, Charlotte Wood, Carrol Naish, Henry Stephenson, and Leonid Kinskey. (90 minutes, 1940)

Dan in Real Life: Friendly comedy-drama of newspaper columnist Dan (Carell), the doting although harried single dad of 3 baby girls. While the family heads off to the Northeast for a holy day at his parents’ seaside home, this widowed dad impulsively meets somebody (Binoche) who appears to be exact for him. The family reunion is replete with family member rivalries, secrets, and resentments. This film manages to ascend above recognizable sitcom level to be an amusing take on middle-aged affairs of the heart. Cast includes Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dane Chef, Dianne West, John Mahoney, Alison Pill, Emily Obtuse, Amy Ryan, Norbert Leo Butz, and Jessica Hecht. (98 minutes, 2007)

Charlie’s Angels: Software giant Eric Knox has been kidnapped. Charlie’s angels are called in to try to free him. What they find is that there is more to this situation than meets the eye.

Cheyenne Autumn: Spreading, choppy, although amusing John Ford Western, his last in regards to Cheyenne Indian tribe and its eventful voyage back to primordial settlement after being resettled by the government. This is Controller Ford’s first film in Remembrance Valley. Avoid City pattern with Stewart as Wyatt Earp was cut after exclusive involvements. Cast includes John Ford, Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker, Karl Malden, Dolores Del Rio, Sal Mineo, Edward G. Robinson, James Stewart, Ricardo Montalban, Gilbert Roland, Arthur Kennedy, Patrick Wayne, Elizabeth Allen, Champ Jory, John Carradine, Mike Mazurki, and George O’Brien. (145 minutes, 1964)

The Lion King: A brilliantly conceived animation, adventure comedy made for the whole family. It tells the story of Simba, the young lion, who is the son of the King. Simba is deceived by Scar, his uncle, and convinced that he is responsible for the death of his father, so he leaves the kingdom. Once he has grown he returns to his home, discovers the lies Scars told, and takes his rightful place, as king of the jungle.

Mysterious Island: Intentionally paced fantasy venture based on 2-part Jules Verne novel, a continuation to his 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. Confederate jail escapees hijack a hot air balloon and are blown off course. They find themselves on an uncharted island with monstrous animals. Incredible visual effects by Ray Harryhausen and an exciting Bernard Herrmann score. Cast includes Michael Craig, Joan Greenwood, Michael Callan, Gary Merrill, and Herbert Lorn. (101 minutes, 1951)

Mission To Mars: In the year 2020 man has sent a team of astronauts to Mars. Then something happens. One cryptic message to Earth, then the crew is never heard from again. NASA quickly puts together a rescue flight. It will be six months before help arrives.
