Applying Conversational Hypnosis When Talking With Someone
Which words should you use to cause covert hypnosis?
Using words that cause someone to see things in a different way is one way to influence how they feel and think. This is called reframing.
A famous example of reframing is glass half empty, half full metaphor. This reframing from viewing the glass not as half empty, but rather as half full, helps people see the positive side of something.
The way someone views more complex things can also be reframed and thus, viewed differently by very simple word changes in a sentence. Let’s look at some examples. Think about these different sentences:
Its beautiful outside today, but its going to be cloudy tomorrow.
Its beautiful outside today, and its going to be cloudy tomorrow.
It’s very pretty outside today, even though tomorrow it’s going to rain.
These sentences describe the same things, but the small change of only a word or two makes you think about the weather differently. Go over these sentences again and be sensitive to how each one makes you feel about the weather today and the weather tomorrow. Can you feel the different attitudes they bring out?
The ways of reframing are many.
Choosing words that expand the frame cause the person listening to see the bigger picture.
Let’s take an example. Your friend is shopping for a new pair of shoes. After finding a very nice pair, she is not sure about buying because she knows the same pair are being sold across town for a better price. To covertly help her make her decision, you say something like: wow, I can’t believe you are getting those shoes for such a nice price and now don’t even have to drive all the way across town.
You can also reframe the context of a situation.
Friend: Man! I really wanted to go to the beach today but its so windy outside it wouldnt be any fun.
You: You’re right. It wouldn’t be any fun just sitting on the beach in this kind of wind, but what must the waves be like? I bet it’ll be great for surfing.
Another type of reframe is the content reframe.
Friend: Can you believe that guy! He just passed us doing a hundred miles an hour! What a jerk!
You: He was going pretty fast. He had his emergency lights on, maybe he is going to the hospital.
This really shows how by changing the language used, you can really change someone’s attitude.
Reframing is very powerful because it is a type of conversational hypnosis.
By reframing you distract the person’s conscious brain and force her to think anew about something using the subconscious mind.
The person does not go into a deep trance like you would expect in a hypnotists office, but he does look inward to the subconscious to think differently about things.
