Astronomy can be a life long pursuit and as with many things, even very serious things, people often become interested at an early age. This exciting science can provide hours of study, which is why astronomy is popular with children and their parents. For children, many parts of astronomy are magical and thus a huge draw. Movies like Star Wars only serve to increase this attraction.

The Earth’s nearest celestial body is the moon. Its circumnavigation of the Earth takes twenty seven days and a bit to complete. It is because it is so close, that it is the only space object that a human has ever walked on, other than the Earth of course. The moon is important for the Earth because it causes the tides through gravitational forces between the Earth and the moon. Because it’s close enough to see clearly with the naked eye, kids are often drawn to astronomy by it.

Then there’s our sun. Earth is quite far from the sun. The distance fluctuates between about 91 million miles and about 94 million miles, although these measurements are not completely accurate. They are inaccurate measurements, because the Earth orbits the sun in an uneven ellipse. Life on Earth is only possible because of the sun, because it provides us with important elements such as light and heat. It is not a well-known fact that the sun contains about 98% of all the mass available in the solar system. Think about how small a person is compared to that – it is truly imponderable!

We live in the galaxy of the Milky Way. It’s full of the material of which space consists, although even with all this stuff to fill it, it’s mostly empty. That’s a lot of nothing because our galaxy is 100,000 light years across and 3,000 light years deep. We’re somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 light years from the galactic central core. The nothingness is broken up by over 100 billion stars. In fact the galaxy takes its name from the appearance of the band of stars that shines from the main section of the galaxy. People thought it looked like a stream of milk and so called it the Milky Way. It’s a spiral galaxy, one of the four major types of galaxies in the universe. The other types are elliptical, lenticular and irregular.

There is a lot of information about astronomy fit for children on the Internet. From dictionaries and encyclopedic references to programs that show different planets, solar systems and objects right on the computer! There’s more information than a child could ever read.

Astronomy is a very serious science, although many people get involved with it when they are very young. Astronomy for kids is a thought provoking pursuit that can teach them about the sciences in general. A number of astronomy subjects interest kids and movies like Star Wars only serve to increase this attraction.

Our only natural satellite is called the moon. Its path around the Earth takes just over twenty seven days to complete. Man’s knowledge being what it is and because the moon is so close, it is the only space object that mankind has ever set foot on, except for the Earth of course. The effects of gravity between the moon and Earth causes the tides. The moon is one of the first objects that sparks a child’s interest in astronomy because it can be clearly seen with the human eye.

Our sun and solar system reside in a galaxy called the Milky Way. Just as other galaxies, ours contains gas and clouds of dust, stars and planets and other space materials. Even with all this stuff to fill it, it’s mostly empty. That’s a lot of nothingness because our galaxy is 100,000 light years across and 3,000 light years deep. The center of our galaxy is about 30,000 light years from Earth. The nothingness is broken up by over 100 billion stars. The galaxy’s name comes from the many stars near the center. From Earth it looks like a Milky Way, a large pool of milk. Our galaxy is called a spiral galaxy as opposed to the other three main types which are elliptical, lenticular and irregular.

You can find a wealth of resources concerning astronomy for teens on the world wide web. Kids could spend hours wrapped in detailed 3D representations of the universe around us.

Astronomy is a serious science and as with many things, even very serious things, people often get in at an early age. This exciting science can provide hours of learning, that’s why astronomy is popular with kids.
