2PM Will Be Back: Their Return To The Kpop World In October
Fans of 2PM were eagerly awaiting a comeback from the group. A while ago, before they released “I’ll Be Back” they surprised the kpop world with a secret timer on their website, which built up even more anticipation for their return. Last week, they made their return, and – unfortunately – have disappointed a lot of their fans, who remember the awesomeness of “Heartbeat” and find this new song paling in comparison. Here are a few complaints about the song:
1) The Terminator: In a recent interview with Allkpop, 2PM said that they had some influence from “The Terminator.” In the video, you’ll see one of the members with a metal hand, and you’ll hear “I’ll Be Back” in the chorus, and – finally – at the end of the video, right before their gymnastic dance sequence, you’ll hear the song from the opening credits of the Terminator. And that’s it for similarities. Otherwise, this song is about a girl and love and sweet stuff, which has little to nothing to do with the Terminator. Why they picked the Terminator as their influence nobody knows, but it’s about as incongruous as you could possibly get.
2) The Dance: 2PM are some of the best dancers in the kpop world, yet for some reason, in the entirety of this video, they do the running man. Yes, the freaking running man. A lot of people are disappointed from this lacklustre performance, and are wondering why they would settle for a dance that went out of style 20 years ago. It’s not even an interesting twist on the running man, the way SNSD did with Run Devil Run. 2PM just did the running man, straight up.
3) The Makeup: for some reason, all of the members are wearing heavy, heavy makeup. We’re not talking about a bit of eyeliner here and there. From the first second you see them in the video, you’re amazed at how much makeup they’re wearing. It’s not subtle. It looks like the ugly friend you had in high school who caked on pounds of makeup.
Altogether, 2PM’s return to the Kpop world is a bit lacklustre with their newest song “I’ll Be Back.” The video was a great disappointment, and didn’t do justice to the song. Hopefully they will release another song and video soon that will bring them back to the level they were at with their other huge hits. “I’ll Be Back” just isn’t it this time around.
